04.07.´12 In July I am staying in Germany in the residency Künslerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop. Also staying here are these artists: Anastasiya Nesterova from Ukraine who makes artist books, Sofi Hagman graphic artist from Sweden, Jürgen Paas sculpture artist from Germany and Jens Brad composer from Germany. After looking around and taking pictures the first two days I have made these patterns, mandalas inspired by the area.
Old pattern from my great grandmother. This pattern was common in Icelandic weaving. This kind of tapestry was put on horses and the women sat on it when riding. The name of this type off weaving is “glitvefnaður”, a brocade with a colorful pattern on black base. My great grandmother, Kristveig Björnsdóttir (b.1881), from Skógar, Axarfirði in North-Þingeyjarsýsla, owned this tapestry.
